Summer School Neckar Now IV: Transformative approaches to a sustainable future – active cities

The School of Engineering and Architecture presents the fourth interdisciplinary Summer School “Neckar Now IV: Transformative approaches to a sustainable future – active cities” taking place from 21st until 25th of August 2023.

An active lifestyle is important for overall physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has had several consequences that have diminished an active lifestyle, such as the closure of gyms and sports facilities, remote working and learning, Social Distancing Measures among others. Moreover, it is expected that the current inflation and energy crises will have a detrimental effect on an active lifestyle by making it more difficult to afford and access the resources and facilities needed to maintain one. However, there are ways that we can target these issues from a planning and design perspective. For example, creating walkable neighborhoods with sidewalks, bike lanes, and well-lit streets, and developing public spaces that are easily accessible to residents and offer opportunities for physical activity. The focus of this year's summer school will be on the difficulties that can arise while planning and developing an active environment.

The Neckar Now Summer School addresses the potential and challenges of a city along the river from an engineering and architectural perspective. Heidelberg provides the perfect setting to learn about current trends and methods of sustainable innovation and design. Field trips, input sessions and expert feedback rounds give the participants the ability to develop different approaches to local problems as well as to create their own projects in an immersive experience. An exciting one-week program for those considering future studies in Water Technology (M.Eng.) or Architecture (B.A. or M.A.).
