„Even a little bit home“

Sherry Goodill was a guest lecturer in Dance Movement Therapy at SRH University Heidelberg for six months.

She was with us from October 2021 to March 2022 – Sherry Goodill, Clincal Professor of Creative Arts at Drexel University in Philadelphia, USA. Invited by Professor Dr. Elizabeth Manders and Professor Dr. Sabine Koch from SRH University Heidelberg, financed by the DAAD as part of a grant for foreign guest lecturers to teach at German universities in winter semester 21/22, Sherry inspired our Dance Movement Therapy students with her warm nature and her 30 years’ wealth of teaching experience.

Her focus is on medically oriented applications of creative arts therapies for people with primary medical illnesses therapy, such as pediatrics, cancer treatment or for people living with other medical conditions. At our university she was very happy, she reports: “I spent a lot of time with the amazing students.” She really appreciated the intercultural learning environment and working with students in the international dance and music therapy programmes. “We learn the most when we are stretched and expanded by our cultural differences and perspectives. When the students from all over the world return to their home countries, they will innovate and lead using skills and knowledge they acquired here at SRH.” The study programmes in the USA and Germany do not differ that much, but the health system in the States is of course very different. “Our clients, their families, and the challenges they face can also be similar.” Sherry is very grateful to SRH University and the DAAD for this experience, she says: “Heidelberg is a charming, easy and accessible city. It was delightful to be here with a team of supportive, brilliant colleagues. Yes, it even was a little bit home.” So she also looks back with a bit of wistfulness: “It was a lovely round of work and community. But now it’s time to return.”
